WHY I BUILT SPEAK MANDARIN FAST

I grew up Chinese.
But I didn't grow up speaking Mandarin.

I grew up in France in a Chinese family.

For years, I distanced myself from Chinese. I wanted to fit in, and speaking French and English felt easier — even cooler.

So I ignored the language.

But as I got older, something started to feel missing.

I wanted to understand where I came from.
My roots. My family. A culture I had spent years keeping at a distance.

Learning Mandarin became my way back in.

It took me from France to Kunming, Beijing, then Hong Kong — and into a completely different life.

I went from keeping Chinese at a distance to living in Mandarin, connecting with people and building new relationships.

It brought me closer to my mother.

And somewhere along the way, learning the language became much more than learning how to speak.

It became a way of rediscovering myself.

Mandarin opened the door to a culture I had once felt disconnected from.

I wanted other people to experience that same feeling — not necessarily to reconnect with their roots, but to connect with people, experience Chinese culture from the inside, and discover a world that language can unlock.
